The ʻalalā (Hawaiian crow) has been extinct in the wild since 2002.
Conservationists on Hawaiʻi Island established a captive breeding program in 1999 to bolster the ʻalalā population. Today, more than 100 ʻalalā exist in captivity and are being reintroduced into the wild.
