LEI DAY EVERYDAY
April 7, 2022 – Kanani Durant
Do you love lei? You know, those beautiful garlands, commonly made with flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts, or even feathers, stacked eye-high on a graduateʻs shoulders or lovingly adorning our moms on Motherʻs Day? Well, we do and we kind of wish we saw people gifting and wearing them more often than just special occasions. I mean, lei, is a Hawaiian expression of aloha and a unique way to weave oneʻs intentions with beautiful materials for someone special. So, to jump start Mei Day and celebrate our love for lei, Work it Out and Milianani Kauaʻi are collaborating to share our knowledge and resources about everything lei with the hope that this unique Hawaiian art form will make its way back into our everyday life.
The Lei Club!
The Lei Club is for people who are interested in learning more about the history of lei, the various types of lei, gathering practices, lei etiquette, and, of course, how to make lei. Members will have the opportunity to access educational materials, participate in giveaways, order our lei club bundle, and ultimately celebrate Hawaiʻiʻs unique tradition by making lei.
Perpetuating the art of lei making
Lei is rooted in Native Hawaiian customs and traditions and we are so fortunate to be able to partake in this beautiful art. This is why we felt it was important that we support an initiative that perpetuates native Hawaiian language and culture. Milianani Kauaʻi and Work it Out will be donating portions of the proceeds from the Lei Club Bundle to Kawaikini Charter School, a Hawaiian immersion School located here on Kauaʻi, where lei making is an integral part of their curriculum from K-12.
